Athabasca Sand Dunes

Park History

Although Athabasca Sand Dunes Provincial Wilderness Park has been recognized as a significant natural area, it was not until 1973 the provincial government proposed the establishment of a protected area. In October 1988, this area was designated as the Athabasca Sand Dunes Park Land Reserve. After four years of public consultation, there was a strong interest shown making the area a park. On August 24, 1992, the area, encompassing 1925 square kilometres, was officially designated a provincial wilderness park.
